Samsara and Bigroad - We have owner operators and our drivers have the choice of using either of these two ELD. Both work just fine and are easy to use.

We use XRS from Omnitracs for our Elog's. We've been up on them for almost two years now with a full implementation 10/1/17. What we like about XRS is it is easy to train drivers on most aspects of the system, provides good nearly real time tracking of our trucks and allows us to track when our drivers are getting low on hours to aid in better dispatching.

We were using BigRoad for almost 4 years; was very happy with it; but looked at other options, looking for a better ROI, cost-effective solution. Settled on Azuga Labs for awesome GPS tracking, user-friendly interface. Azuga has partnered with ISE and their efleetsuite to handle the ELD requirements.

We are running Rand McNally. We wanted a system that does not use a smart phone or tablet. Also wanted truck routes and mapping. Rand McNally offers both. We tried telematics and we had many issues with devices communicating with our Mack trucks. Very unhappy. Glad we moved to Rand McNally

We went with JJ Keller cause we know they are not going anywhere. I started this in the early months of 2016, so we are done and all is good. They have been receptive when we needed help, have done seminars for us/our drivers and they respond quickly. The dislike is they have glitches on different devices (we have owner operators so they all use their own device) and they are working on them and getting better each update. We feel they are a strategic partner.

LIKE: We’re using Rand McNally and have been 80% compliant for the past 2 years… Just have a handful of older employees that are not on it yet, but will be by November. All new hires for the past 3 years have been forced to start it right away.
DISLIKE: Up until a couple months ago they were not DOT Compliant as it didn’t ping the location of the truck enough…. Seems to need a lot of updates which can occur at any time and may waist driver working day…

I have Big Road. It's a very easy app to use. I like it. I almost got Keep Trucking but went with Big Road because of familiarity. I've been using the app for years now. It is very easy to use. I actually just started using ELD that plugs into the computer of the truck. It makes it so easy to keep track of my starting and ending mileage. I have a few chassis that i use all the time and it remembers them and the plate numbers. It makes setting up the log in the morning a breeze. I tried keep trucking for 1 day and then decided on getting Big Road. The monthly fee includes the equipment. $19.95 for owner operator and $25 a month if you have more than 1 truck. It keeps track of ifta miles by state also. I can run a report at the end of the quarter. Keep Trucking has added features too like hard breaking or fast acceleration and geofencing. I don't think Big Road has that geo fencing feature yet. I want to add geo fencing so when the lines to get into the port are bad I can track the time in line outside the port.

As a “local/regional” intermodal hauler it was very difficult to find providers understanding the “local exemption” and willing to write their software to accommodate the exemptions and HOS sets. Geotab was excellent in this area. Also the installation is very easy. The ability to send the “hard copy” of a log is very easy.

The only thing we don't like about EROAD is the 3 year contract. Anything with a contract that goes beyond a year is questionable in case there are problems. What we like is that it's a plugged in device. It's always on the dash and does not require any extra time on the driver. Blue tooth/phones/tablet solutions are all very time consuming to log into the device after you get the truck running. If the phone battery dies, or is low..you have problems. You have to rely heavily on the driver's own personal equipment and that would be a huge drawback. With Eroad, its a plugged in device so that totally eliminates all of those issues. It also does IFTA reporting for you.

we were already using them for driver compliance so it was a smooth transition to add this. Also the other programs I looked at did things like put driver violations for out of hours in red for the cops. We want them to work for it not point it out. Cost factor as well, some were more costly and then we would have to get licenses to merge their programs with Keller.

We are going with Rand McNally. Pricing was better than Omni-Tracs and Peoplenet for a small carrier. Liked their access to their mapping which is designed for trucks. We wanted a unit to hardwire into the trucks and the 765 if working well. We have had some software issues with the older trucks and engine ECM’s communicating with their system. local office is in Tualatin, Oregon and headquarters is in Auckland, New Zealand. Ongoing issues with the ELD’s not being accurate. I understand from my contacts that other vendors are having similar issues. I attribute this to the Obama administration dragging their feet on the deadlines to provide required specifications for the units and these delays worked against the industry. While I fully support the ELD concept I feel it is in no way “ready for prime time” on December 18, 2017.
